• featured wedding Megan and Josh Megan and Josh, who met at Yale, currently live in Seattle and returned to Megan's favorite childhood summer spot on Squam Lake in New Hamsphire for their perfectly sunny August I Do's. Their day was a fast-paced, multi-location puzzle that started at an inn, moved to their lakeside home, then to an island and finally back to the initial inn to party by way of trolleys, cars and boats. Phew! It was a day that never slowed down, but also made for amazing visual variety. Click here to view the slideshow. "The question is not what you look at, but what you see." - Henry David Thoreau

Happy September! With Labor Day tucked behind us, school in session and (gasp!) leaves starting to change in New England, it seems the perfect time to pause and reflect on our busy summer as we look forward to an exciting fall.
• booking trends To say things have been busy at emilie inc. since I mailed our spring newsletter doesn't seem to describe our summer justly. I returned home from my own wedding in April, and jumped head first into our busiest season yet: 50 weddings between myself and my associates J and Whitney! Curious as to the demographics of our clientele, I recently ran some numbers and put together a lengthy blog post on where our brides and grooms are from (the answer might surprise you), where they are marrying, when, who they are booking and a range of other graphs and pie charts. Head on over to the blog to catch a glimpse of these meaty stats. • tangible memories In addition to turning wedding images around to our clients the week following their wedding, our designer Christina has been producing album designs, included in each wedding's blog post. These designs highlight my favorite photos in a thoughtful sequence to assist brides and grooms in visualizing their day as a complete photo story. Purchasing an album is a popular addition to our creative fee, as an anniversary gift or holiday surprise. 2009 couples should look for a special promotion in the mail from me about that next month!
• portrait tour Speaking of the holidays, it's never too early to start thinking about holiday card photos! During the next few months, I will be photographing in several cities to raise money for Pink Initiative, the breast cancer nonprofit I founded. Each session includes a disc of all of the images taken and a $75 credit towards our custom photo cards. Please check the blog for more information and email me for availability to secure your session!
9/7 Kennebunkport, ME (sold out) 9/25 Baltimore, MD 9/26-27 Washington, DC 10/4 Hollis, NH (sold out) 10/18 Portland, ME 10/24-25 New York, NY 11/21-22 Philadelphia, PA Portrait sessions, I should clarify, are not the standard smile-and-pose-for-the-camera headaches. Like our approach to wedding photography, portraits are meant to be experiences photographed. A romp at the beach with your pups, a picnic with your beloved, or- one of my favorites from the summer- a lazy afternoon at the lakehouse. Personalities and moments are best captured when they are not forced. Likewise, with small children who may not understand and don't appreciate the gift you are investing, playdates in familiar surroundings- your house or nearby park- make for the most natural backdrops.
• studio news Outside of photographing weddings and portraits, our summer has been full of good news and fantastic developments. In May I was the recipient of a Portland Buy Local award, recognized as the best "store without a front" offering exceptional customer service and quality. In June I received an electric guitar from entreverge as one of Portland's "rockstar entrepreneurs." True story. I have no plans to join a band, but the other more substantial perks of the win have been incredibly beneficial including access to a host of the area's premier successful start-ups.
• Roots Workshop In July, I returned to Cape Cod for the second Roots Workshop and a week of creative visual storytelling. Again students photographed lobstermen, small town theatre, baseball, ice cream... quintessential novelties of summertime on the Cape. In the process, these wedding photographers transformed their seeing process as they learned the foundations of true photojournalism. It was intense, and insanely fun. Somuchso a success that we've agreed to host again next July 18-23!! Registration is open to any photographer (not just wedding photographers) starting September 15th at 9a. Check out the redesigned workshop website and new blog for more information.
• personal project Lastly, and by no means least, I was fortunate to experience something this summer that I don't often allow myself the opportunity. I took a time-out of sorts, smack dab in the middle of wedding season, to travel to St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis with a fitness performance team from Nashua, New Hampshire. Simple as that, but so profoundly life-changing that not a day has passed since I have returned that I don't think about the children we met and the awesome establishment that is St. Jude's. Please take a moment and view the slideshow of images I took from this important journey.
