ASH SCOTLAND UPDATE
Become an ASH Scotland Smoke-free Supporter

ASH Scotland provides a range of services that are highly regarded and well known within Scotland’s public health field. Yet most people know us because of our campaigning work which aims to highlight the harm that is caused by smoking and its impact on health inequalities.

You may not realise that we cannot use the public funding we receive to finance our campaigns. Instead we rely on individual donations to maintain the high profile that tobacco has on the public health agenda and in the minds of policy makers, MSPs, and the media.

Today ASH Scotland has launched a new service to allow individuals to sign up by direct debit to directly support our vital campaign work. You can also join our campaigners network to be kept up-to-date when we are campaigning on specific issues and need your help.

Written Answers Thursday 4 February 2010

James Kelly (Glasgow Rutherglen) (Lab): To ask the Scottish Executive what steps are being taken to tackle alcohol and drug misuse in schools. (S3O-9375)

Michael Russell: All children and young people should have access to reliable, credible and appropriate information about drugs, alcohol and tobacco develop a knowledge and understanding of the use and misuse of a variety of substances, including alcohol, throughout their education.

Curriculum for Excellence, Health and Wellbeing experiences and outcomes provides teachers with opportunities to develop young people’s awareness of alcohol, drugs, tobacco and other substances and the associated harm and risks to health. Teachers are expected to help children and young people make healthy and responsible choices in exploring these issues and the impact of life choices.

Schools can and do make a difference in educating young people about the dangers of alcohol and drug misuse, but they cannot do it on their own. Multi-agency partnerships have an important role in educating young people about the dangers of risk taking behaviour.
