To Russia with Love

In 2008, TWR broadcasts on two large Russian nationwide networks were terminated, ending Christian radio programming for large areas in Russia. Fortunately, TWR was able to utilize another well-positioned transmitter in Estonia, but the signal strength was at first too weak to penetrate the large cities in Russia. So began TWR’s strategic Estonia Transmitter Project.

The Event of the Decade

Word is getting out about Cape Town 2010: The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization. It will draw approximately 4,000 evangelical leaders from 200 nations, and many thousands more will participate across Africa and around the world. This Congress seeks to engage evangelicals on a global scale and is probably the farthest-reaching of its kind ever held.

Through a consultative process, Cape Town 2010 has on its agenda a list of the most critical issues facing the Church today. One of the goals of the Congress is to make sure that these issues are thoroughly engaged by as many Christians as possible before, during and long after the Congress. Thus, The Lausanne Global Conversation website was developed to facilitate discussion.

TWR and a network of other radio and media ministries were brought together to extend the reach. As a result, more people can take part in this Lausanne Global Conversation and more people will be able to put the outcomes of the Congress into action.

Before the Congress, the network will broadcast Down to Earth, which comprises a series of programs on each of the critical issues. These programs will involve an overview, an expert-interview and a discussion. After each broadcast, listeners will be left with challenging questions and a number to which they can text-message their comments. TWR has already completed two series of programs which are now available for broadcast. These are titled Children at Risk and Reaching Oral Communities.

During the Congress, the network will endeavor to facilitate maximum participation by remote communities. The Congress will then be used as a catalyst to broadcast programs long into the future, encouraging the African Church to put the outcomes into practice.

Recently, Project Hannah’s Global Ministry Director/Founder Marli Spieker was interviewed by the Lausanne Movement for a feature in the “Leader’s Profiles” section of their monthly e-newsletter. Lausanne World Pulse (LWP) is an online, monthly magazine providing missions and evangelism news, information and analysis. They strive to support the advancement of the gospel worldwide by providing missions and evangelism news, information and analysis through their publication. The Lausanne III Congress event will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in October 2010.

Asha's Story

Throughout their lives, Asha and her three sisters were aware that their father discriminated against them because of their gender. Into adulthood, Asha suffered from an inferiority complex and low self-esteem. Her father’s discrimination caused her to lose her self-worth and shaped her perception that a woman has no significant status in society.

“Whenever I think about how lowly I am regarded by my father, I would plunge into a state of depression,” Asha said. “I have had a difficult life. Even as a child, I had to depend on my relatives for financial support to complete my studies.”

Asha also witnessed continual domestic violence in her home. But because of her exposure to that pain, Asha ended up working for a social organization that campaigned against domestic violence. One day, Asha’s life changed.

“I turned on the radio and heard this broadcast that was tailored for women,” Asha said. “The program that day touched on the value of women. From this program, I came to experience God’s enduring and tender love for me. He made me realize that I am his valued child, no matter what. In God’s amazing love, I have found peace and joy. I am grateful for this program as I would never have known this peace and joy through my earthly parents.”

Asha’s renewed hope in God has motivated her to write to TWR-Nepal to share her story and encourage others who face similar struggles. She is excited to discover more about God’s teachings with her Bible from TWR-Nepal and to grow in her relationship with God as she attends regular church services.

Indonesia: Stronger in their Faith

The following testimony is by Santoso, one of the ministry area coordinators in Asia, who works among the Madurese-speaking people in Indonesia. Part of Santoso’s role includes radio distribution, which requires him to work closely with local churches and other Christian organizations. This work is made possible through the many volunteers who assist him in the coordination of listeners’ meetings and radio program promotion.

“I am in charge of developing listener groups and ministering to listeners. I work mainly among the Madurese speaking people, and I have experienced great growth among the people, both in terms of numbers and spirituality.

“The listener care groups meet for fellowship not just on Sundays, but also regularly hold meetings among themselves. As the coordinator, I do my best to help build their spiritual lives by studying the Bible together with them and encouraging them with testimonies.

“During the meetings, the listeners would also share from God’s Word and also quote from the Thru the Bible (Madurese) programs which they have listened to, to encourage one another. They also support one another using God’s Word as they draw guidance from the sermons in TWR’s radio broadcasts.

“The people have grown stronger in their faith. It is evident when they face some obstacles and trials. All the members of the group will gather to support those who are facing difficulties and troubles in their lives. I can really see the group growing in their fellowship with one another and also in their togetherness as brothers and sisters in Christ. Praise the Lord!”
