Speaking Hope to Latin America

From a powerful 100,000-watt transmitter on the island of Bonaire, or a 50,000-watt transmitter in Uruguay, or from more than 500 local radio stations, the biblical message of God's love and forgiveness radiates to millions of needy souls throughout Latin America. For the last 47 years, TWR has been speaking hope to Latin America every day through radio, on-the-ground ministry, websites and personal follow-up.

To disciple and train believers, TWR utilizes radio programming, correspondence courses and on-the-ground seminars. For example, Mensajes de Fe y Esperanza (Messages of Faith and Hope) for Cuba is a five-minute daily program produced by Cuban believers.

TWR’s producer of Mensajes de Fe y Esperanza recently traveled to several parts of Cuba to meet with listeners to 800 AM’s transmissions from Bonaire.  Covering more than 70% of the span of the country, Alberto Gonzales met with listening groups and house churches. The crowds spilled out the doors and people had to sit outside, just to look in the window to see and hear Alberto.

Many listeners stay up all night to listen to the program music, and some had been recording the programs onto cassette to lend to their friends who could not stay up at night to listen.  Alberto also met new listeners who recently gave their lives to Christ as a result. Many people are coming to Christ and starting house churches based on the teaching that they receive from TWR’s transmission site on Bonaire.

Seasoning KZN with the Gospel

For 25 years, TWR-South Africa (TWR-SA) has been reaching into the KwaZulu Natal (KZN) community with the love and truth of Jesus Christ. Their vision is for every man, woman and child to be equipped as true disciples of Jesus Christ to help transform their communities.

Many people have been blessed through this ministry. One young man recently wrote telling of how this ministry has affected his life:

“I grew up in a very abusive home, and my mother passed away when I was 15. I grew up without knowing my father. After the death of my mother, I had to go and stay with my uncle in his house. My uncle treated me very badly. I went to stay with my friend’s parents instead. It was there where I learned to pray for the first time. Every evening they tune into your program. I began to enjoy listening to your preaching before we prayed together as a family. It was through your teachings that I began to understand the Bible, and I finally gave my life to the Lord. Now I have a great peace in my heart. I have forgiven all the people who have mistreated me. I have also begun to tell other young people about Jesus.”

Broken families, untimely deaths and abuse are a few among the many difficult issues facing communities in KZN. Thankfully, God redeems a life in spite of any difficult situation, as this testimony demonstrates.

TWR-SA is speaking God’s love and truth into KZN through community radio stations, AM transmissions and Project Hannah prayer groups. The five-year goal is to reach 40,000 families, 1,000 pastors and various community leaders. Please keep this ministry in your prayers.

TWR Interns Create Vlog

“The Interns” is a video blog (vlog) featuring the summer adventures of the two social media interns at TWR’s Cary, NC, office. Collectively, Bethany Kay, a rising senior at Moody Bible Institute and California native, and Gustaf Lunnergard of Sweden will give people a fresh, inside look at what’s going on behind the scenes of their internships and the in the office. We’re also going to highlight various TWR projects and feature other people in the office.

“The video blog is a fun, new way to see into the lives of TWR interns,” says Bethany, 20. “Viewers will watch as Gustaf and I learn our way around Cary, NC, are exposed to the inner-workings of TWR, and see Gustaf discovering America for the first time!”

Three to four vlog posts will be rolled out each week and will be 3-5 minutes each. TWR friends are encouraged to subscribe to the RSS feed and follow these two eager, young interns this summer.

Restored Through Love and Peace

Mary is an avid listener of TWR-Asia’s programs in Vietnam. She is actively involved in church activities such as organizing Bible study classes for the various age groups. She also visits cell groups to follow up with the needs of the members. Looking at her today, few would have guessed Mary’s past. Her dreams for an ideal family were shattered upon her husband’s sudden death. She lost all hope in life and darkness overwhelmed her for a prolonged period of time.

Mary said, “I was about to give birth to my first child and saw myself as a woman who had just fulfilled her dream of having a blissful family. It was during this period that I received the fateful news that my husband was killed at war, just a few days before I gave birth.

“Four days after my husband’s burial, I gave birth to my first child. Grief filled me when I looked at my newborn son, and I seriously wondered if there was a living God who cares.”

Mary’s world came crashing down. In her desperate state, she felt abandoned and alone, and the heavy burdens as a young single mother weighed upon her. She never expected that her life was about to be transformed overnight through a radio program.

“I had accidentally tuned into a channel that was touching on the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. The responses that Jesus gave to Peter in John 13:7 – who was initially reluctant to let Jesus wash his feet – spoke to my heart. Jesus said, ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ I cried and prayed to God to reveal his plan for me. I committed my life to him and started to feel a peace in my heart which I had never felt before.”
