Day 32 – Cambodia

Date entered by ABWE as a mission field: 1997
Major ABWE ministries: Church planting, Bible literature

Surrounded by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia is a southeast Asian country known for its political upheavals in the past. A French colony until 1953, Cambodia has since had a monarch, military leaders and a communist government. The highlight of the country’s history is the terror of Pol Pot and the decimation he caused, which remains a prominent feature in Cambodia today.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Cambodia shifted to a free market economy in 1990. However, the loss of Soviet bloc money led to Cambodian dependence on donor countries for about 45 percent of their income and for help with rebuilding their infrastructure. Nevertheless, the rural population, which comprises 85 percent of the population, still relies on subsistence rice farming.

Prayer Requests

Phil and Karen Coppola
  • For the New Beginnings Youth Center, that the Lord would give us contacts that will turn into evangelistic opportunities.
  • For wisdom as we seek to understand this culture (especially among the young adults) and how to reach them for Christ.
  • For Joshua, as he finishes up college at Cedarville; for steady employment along the way.
  • For Caleb, Charity and Abigail as they finish high school, take SATs and decide what the future holds.
  • For health for Karen (who has MS) and Phil as they serve the Lord.
Angela Atwell
  • While visiting in the community around the church, I have met several ladies and had conversations with them. Please pray for more opportunities to visit with them.
  • In our children’s ministry this quarter, we have been studying  Bible stories. Please pray that the children will believe in the Savior.
  • Please pray for our discipleship Bible study for young ladies in the church.
Rob and Kristi Cady
  • Pray for six men who went forward during a conference we had for Cambodian American returnees. Three men got saved and three men got right with God.
  • Pray for Phil Coppola Rob as they looked to work a lot with three Khmer men in our church. The purpose is to spend intensive time with them as future leaders at New Heart Baptist.
  • Pray for the following young men to be stable and that they would become future leaders in the church:  Sarat (who desires to marry a Buddhist girl), Dymong, Sophan and Ponlue.
  • Pray for fruitfulness as we follow up on a number of people that came to our family day at the church a couple of weeks ago.
  • Pray that God would cause the Ministry of Religions to start granting new church permits. At the present, they are not giving out new permits.
  • Pray for the salvation of Watha.
  • Pray for Pauw and his wife, Sophat, to have a strong, godly marriage. He in particular needs to be stronger as a Christian.
  • Pray for the team. The evil one seems to want to get various team members sick or have various pain issues.
  • Pray for continued growth in grace for both our children and Phil and Karen Coppola's children.
