Commitment: Why Speaking is like tackling in Rugby

This is part 2 in the series of why successfully speaking is like tackling in rugby.

If a hefty rugby player is running at you, normal human instinct is to either freeze or run away.   Many people, faced with the thought of standing on a stage in front of the audience want to do the same thing.

Successful  speakers  learn  to feel comfortable in the spotlight, and successful rugby players overcome the self-preservation instinct and go in for the tackle.

Success in both requires three things, and they form the acronym T + A + P.

T stands for Technique

A stands for Attitude

P stands for Practice

Be committed not reluctant.

Whether tackling, or speaking, if you don’t want to be there it shows.  Decide you want to do it, choose to put your best foot forward, and put your heart into it, and your chance of success increases a thousand-fold.

And you might even be as successful as this year's Cantgerbury Air New Zealand Cup team who, despite losing half the team to the All Blacks, still managed to win the Air New Zealand Cup final.)

Go forth with courage this week!

Help for Speakers Events

Event 1: Teleclass for speaking at weddings.

I'm trying something new for people who have to speak at a wedding this summer.  Whether you're a Father of the Bride, BestMan, Bridesmaid, Bride or Groom, you'll get something out of the "Making a Wedding Speech Seem Easy " teleclasses series.   It will run over four weeks, for half an hour at a time, and will help you plan, write and practice a great speech for an upcoming wedding.  If you're interested (or know someone who is), then let me know.  The time will be arranged to suit participants - probably a Monday evening or Saturday morning.  Cost for the first series is $50 incl GST for four sessions and a written tip-sheet.  E-mail me at rachel@helpforspeakers.com or phone or text 021 0275 9023 for more information.
