Help for Speakers Tip of the Week
The Audience will be on your side if you are on theirs

So get on their side.

Many people fear public speaking because they worry about being judged or criticised by their audience.

These worries are usually vastly overstated.  Most audiences are on your side.  They want you to succeed.  No one wants to spend time in a room with someone who doesn't want to be there.

In fact, most audiences want you to enjoy yourself, because if you enjoy being there, they'll enjoy it more too.

What makes it most likely for them to enjoy it?  It's if you've taken the time and trouble to work out what their needs, wants and desires are, and set out to meet them.

Always start any presentation by assessing your audience.  Sure, you've got a message for them - but to deliver it effectively you need to think about them and their needs and tailor it effectively.   You need to get on their side, so you can get them on yours.

If you'd like to read something more, I recommend  Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In.  It isn't about public speaking ( I first came across it as a mandatory text in my Negotiation and Mediation Classes at University) but I realise I draw on its principles when I'm planning to meet the needs of an audience.

In negotiating or speaking, you can get the audience on your side, if you first get on theirs - understand their needs, interests and positions, so you can effectively communicate, and build a win win result.

"Rachel delivered her message with clarity, enthusiasm and professionalism.  She had obviously prepared well, and we enjoyed her interactive style and thought-provoking presentation. Her use of humour, as well as her ability to connect with her audience, was outstanding.   Our speakers are allowed 20 minutes which Rachel timed to perfection.  There were plenty of people who wanted to engage with Rachel immediately after her presentation, which is a good sign that people wanted to learn more"
