Help for Speakers:Tip of the Week #12: A one word warm-up from Rachel Prosser
www.HelpforSpeakers.com
At the moment I’m enjoying working with the Gifted and Talented extension groups at a local Intermediate School (with pupils aged 11 to 13). This morning was the second of three workshops, preparing them for the Rotary International speech contest.
Some exercises are great for any age-group. They’ve had particular fun with the exercise in last week’s Tip – what 12 year old wouldn’t like poking their tongue out!
This week's tip is another easy warm-up. It's simple, and you can do it in the car driving to your speaking venue.
Extend your mouth to it’s fullest extent by saying the word Yeowza!!
Take your time over each syllable - Yee –ow-zaah
Really stretch your mouth sideways on the “Yee”. Open wide and then point your lips on the “Ow” and hit the “z” hard on the Zaaah.
YEOWZA!!!!
Credits: I learned this from Roydon Gibbs at a NSANZ Professional Development Series training. Roydon said he learned it from Charles Drace at an earlier session. Roydon is normally known as a visual communication specialist - see more about him at www.roydon.co.nz
