Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome' (right)
Semi-double royal purple flowers completely cover this low-growing perennial from late summer through frost. Butterfly favorite!
Use in the front of the mixed border or as edging along paths. Absolutely stunning with grasses.
Grows 1’-2’ tall x 2’-3’ wide.
Full to part sun. Average but moist garden soil. Does not like wet feet in the winter.
Cut back after flowering to prevent seeding.
Aster dumosum 'Wood's Pink'
Compact bushy habit with small, glossy green leaves. Herbaceous.
Semi-double pink flowers with yellow centers completely cover this low-growing perennial from late summer through fall. Butterfly favorite!
Use in cottage and rock gardens or containers.
Grows 1’-2’ tall and wide.
Full sun.
Average but moist garden soil. Does not like wet feet.
Cut back after flowering to prevent seeding.
Aster tataricus 'Jindai'
Common Name: Tatarian Aster
'Jindai' is more compact than the species but still grows a robust 4'-5' tall x 2'-3' wide.
Large, dark green, paddle-shaped leaves give this sturdy perennial substantial presence even when it's not in bloom.
Light lavender flowers with yellow centers emerge in late summer, often persisting until frost.
The cultivar was discovered in the Jin-Dai Botanical Garden in Tokyo, Japan.
Important Note: This plant can spread quite aggressively by underground rhizomes in fertile, fluffy, healthy garden beds. Keep it contained in a large pot, or plant in an area where it has room to spread without bullying out its neighbors.
Aster laevis 'Bluebird'
Common Name: Smooth Aster
A lower growing upright aster with gracefully arching stems. Blue-green leaves are smooth (no serrations) and can grow up to 4" long.
Grows 2'-3' tall and wide.
Blooms early September through October.
Flowers have violet-blue rays and yellow centers.
'Bluebird' doesn't usualy need staking and you shouldn't have to pinch these asters back during the growing season.
Tolerates clay soil and drought once established.
Aster oblongifolius 'Raydon's Favorite'
Low-growing aster with a prolific flush of daisy-like lavender flowers in late summer/autumn.
Grows 2’-3’ tall x 1’ wide.
Pinch back until early July for nice, full plants and tons of blooms.
Site in full sun. Tolerates clay soils and relatively dry conditions once established.
Attracts flocks of butterflies and human admirers!

Aster divaricatus
Common Name: White Wood Aster
Native to the eastern U.S. An aster for all seasons!
Oblong, coarsely serrated leaves are borne on nearly black stems - absolutely striking.
White flowers have yellow centers that age to pink. Blooms August - October.
Grows 2'-3' tall x 1.5' -2' wide.
Site in part to full shade and well-drained soil. Very drought tolerant once established.

Kalimeris 'Shogun' (left)
Common Name: Shogun Aster
Dark green foliage edged in creamy yellow, ages to white. Leaves resemble a mint.
Small lavender flowers with yellow centers top plants from late summer to early fall.
Useful in containers or co-mingling with tall perennials or spring bloomers in the border.
Grows 1½’-2' tall (in bloom) x 1’ wide.
Site in morning sun/afternoon shade or high filtered light.
