ARG has been selected by the WFTDA to host the nation's South Central Regional Tournament, September 25-27, 2009. This Southern Fried Smackdown will be the largest roller derby event ever held in the Southeast, with athletes and fans from more than 15 states in attendance!

Venue and ticketing information for this event has not yet been determined: visit the SFS website
for updates. You do not want to miss this weekend of incredible derby action!

The East Coast Extravaganza is a 2-day tournament held in Philadelphia every summer. Teams come from all over the country to get a chance to play against skaters from other leagues.

This year our very own Dirty South Derby Girls will be going head to head against #10 ranked Cincinnati on 6/27 and the next day they will be battling it out with the Montreal Rollergirls' New Skids on the Block. DSDG is currently ranked 27th in the country and hope to move up following this exciting derby-filled weekend.

Much like other sports, various Flat Track Roller Derby organizations keep track of teams and how they perform against each other. Currently, there are three main systems that rank Flat Track Roller Derby teams across the country and each system uses different methods. Sometimes at our Dirty South Derby Girls games you'll see some large gaps between the teams' scores. These point spreads contribute directly to how the Atlanta Rollergirls are ranked by each of the 3 main systems. Currently, there is no "mercy rule" in the sport of Flat Track Roller Derby to keep higher skilled teams from racking up the points and it's in the interest of the team to do so for ranking purposes.

There are three main ranking systems that are most closely watched in the world of Flat Track Roller Derby. Click here for more info on these three systems.

Last week CNN released a story about women who play roller derby. The article discussed a few of the benefits of the sport, including the feeling of camaraderie experienced by many of the women, and the strenuous workouts involved in training. The story also addressed the inevitable injuries that come from playing such an intense sport. Click here to read the article.

Our very own founder, Tanya Hyde, was interviewed for the popular "Stuff Mom Never Told You" series from the "HowStuffWorks" website. The interviewers go over the history of rollerderby, from its humble roots in the 1930s to its current incarnation as an event that is half sport and half spectacle, but all action. Tanya gives us the lowdown on what it takes to become a rollergirl and the perks that come from being a member of a roller derby league.

You can listen to the podcast here, and you can also read an article on roller derby from the "How Things Work" series.
