Healthy Frederick Week
The American Diabetes Association, Frederick Mayor Randy McClement, County Commissioner Blaine Young, FMH, the Frederick Chamber, Key 103, 106.9 The Eagle, 99.9 WFRE and 930 WFMD have partnered to launch Healthy Frederick Week (HFW), from October 3 to October 9.
HFW is a call to action aimed at increasing awareness and providing opportunities for residents and businesses to make critical life changes to improve their health. Workshops, demos and events are scheduled throughout the week, culminating in a celebration at Barker Park with the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes on October 9.

September 22 - Theater Season Launch Party
Frederick County theater groups will unveil their 2011-2012 season from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center with preview performances, refreshments, and door prizes. The public is invited to attend the event presented by the Frederick Arts Council.

September 23 - One Maryland One Book Author Visit
Sherman Alexie is author of the 2011 One Maryland One Book selection, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian". Alexie was named one of The New Yorker’s 20 top writers for the 21st century. His works are infused with humor and candor, he shows life as it is compelling audiences to see the world for all of its pitfalls and possibilities. Frederick County Public Libraries will present an author talk and Q&A, followed by a book signing, at the Weinberg Center. The event is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. September 24 - FCB Community Shred Day
Frederick County Bank is hosting another free Community Shred Day at its Antietam Branch (198 Thomas Johnson Dr.) on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Bring up to three boxes of documents that contain sensitive information, like your Social Security number, date of birth, address or bank account numbers, and FCB will make sure they’re shredded and disposed of safely.
September 27 - Ag in Education Fundraiser
A fundraising dinner, including beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, and venison will support Western Maryland Agriculture in Education and the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Barn in Springfield Farm, Williamsport Museum, 14 Springfield Lane, Williamsport, MD. October 3 - SJRCS Golf Tournament
St. John Regional Catholic School with present its 14th annual Monsignor Echle Memorial Golf Tournament at Musket Ridge Gofl Course. All levels of Golfers are welcome, and encouraged to play. Advertising hole sponsorships are also available. Click here for more info.
October 1 - Bull & Oyster Bash at Trinity School
Trinity School of Frederick (6040 New Design Rd.) will host its 2nd Annual Bull & Oyster Bash Under the Stars at 6 p.m. on the school grounds. Admission is $50 per person and includes Blue Point oysters, pit beef, sides, and desserts. Drinks include Flying Dog Brews, wine, and soft drinks. Live entertainment by Frederick's own Jug Band. October 5 - Christmas Cash for Kids at Canal Bar
The Canal Bar & Grill is having a grand re-opening celebration event, with proceeds benefiting Christmas Cash for Kids, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event features a complimentary buffet, door prizes, drink specials, and a live broadcast by WFMD/WFRE. Support a worthy cause, celebrate the Canal Bar’s newly-remodeled space and new menu, and bid on Sky Box seats for the Ravens vs. Texans game. Click here for more info.
October 29 - Habitat for Humanity 5K
Join Dorothy, the Wizard and others in Habitat for Humanity’s 2nd Annual “There’s No Place Like Home” 5K Run/Walk Race to raise funds so Deborah can move into her Habitat home by Christmas. Race starts at 8:30 am at William R. Talley Rec Center in downtown Frederick. Runners and spectators are encouraged to come dressed as a favorite Oz character. Return at 2 p.m. to watch a special showing of the Wizard of Oz at the Weinberg Center. Click here for more info.

United Way Grant Applications
United Way of Frederick County is accepting grant applications through October 3. UWFC’s Community Impact Grants provide funding for collaborative partnerships that address goals related to education, income and health with an emphasis on organizations that advocate and mobilize volunteers to implement systemic and long-lasting results. In addition to meeting specific eligibility criteria, organizations are required to work in partnership to achieve measurable, community-level changes in the at least one of the three focus areas. Volunteers needed for Fitness & Athletics Equity
Special Olympics Maryland is working in partnership with more than 20 Frederick County high schools in support of the Fitness and Athletics Equity for Students with Disabilities Law. Maryland is the first state in the country to enact this landmark legislation which ensures students with disabilities are provided with equivalent opportunities in interscholastic sports. On October 26, athletes from Frederick County High School programs will compete at three Frederick County locations: Baker Park, Frederick High School & Thomas Johnson High School. Volunteers are needed as officials, to monitor courts, escort athletes to competition and awards and many other volunteer positions. Click here for more info.
