Oil and Gas “Renaissance”
Could Boost Montana

What if the two top suppliers of global oil growth were not in the Middle East, South America or Africa, but here in North America?

According to Jim Burkhard, a global energy expert with Cambridge Energy Research Associates, that possibility is not too far-fetched. The United States and Canada could both become leading energy producers in the next decade, accruing new jobs for Montana and energy security for the nation.

“Over the past two years, the U.S. has had the largest increase in oil production of any country. Canada has also become a major source of supply growth—and the largest foreign supplier of oil to the U.S.— because of its oil sands development,” Burkhard told members and guests of the Montana Petroleum Association during its annual “Industry Appreciation Day” in Billings.

Burkhard believes the “renaissance” in U.S. oil production is due to three factors: the application of technologies such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing; higher oil prices; and access to private property for exploration and production.

“Montana has the potential to participate in this renaissance through the jobs that will be created by enhanced energy production. Building the Keystone pipeline will open up greater opportunities for production and for refineries in Montana by providing a direct link to global markets,” he explained.

“An oil production renaissance in the U.S. and Canada would strengthen our energy security and create jobs while reducing our trade imbalance,” he said.

The Montana Petroleum Association supports the construction of the TransCanada Keystone XL oil pipeline and responsible energy development in Montana.

The Montana Petroleum Association, Inc. is a voluntary, non-profit trade association, serving a membership of oil and natural gas producers, gathering and pipeline companies, petroleum refiners, service providers and consultants.
