James Dooms

May 1, 1971 -
May 15, 2010

Just two weeks after his 39th birthday, our dear friend James Dooms met his untimely death in a plane crash on the beach in Port St. Lucie on Saturday, May 15, 2010. Perhaps it was serendipitous that he was doing one of the things he loved the most -- photographing surfers.

James was a member of our Branch’s Communications Committee, serving as our official photographer for many USGBC functions, most notably at all of our popular “HallowGreen” events. He was always eager to help, and his enthusiasm was infectious. He had the ability to capture us all at our best, recognizing that “beauty” is all in the eye of the beholder.

James will be missed by us all, and remembered always.

BD+C 301: Implementing the Building Design + Construction LEED Rating System

Sponsored by:

This workshop is intended for professionals who are familiar with the basic concepts of the LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations Rating System, but new to implementing it on projects or looking to brush up on implementation best practices.  It is appropriate for new LEED APs, as well as those pursuing GBCI's LEED AP Building Design + Construction credential.

Bahar Armaghani, an official USGBC LEED Faculty member, will walk the class through the phases of a typical project, including key decisions that project teams must make and guidance on how to make them. Throughout the day, you will engage with other participants in interactive activities that use case examples to enable you to work hands-on with the LEED Rating System.

MAY BRANCH MEETING RECAP:
PIZZA FUSION CASE STUDY

An emerging new focus in green building is LEED for Retail. Meeting participants were treated to a change of venue and enjoyed the lovely interiors and great food at Pizza Fusion in Wellington.  Their motto is “Saving the World One Pizza at a Time.” Owner John Lombardi shared his passion for sustainability with Architect John Garra by committing full circle to the health and wellbeing of its customers  -- from the environment to the food preparation to how it is served.

There are six key features from this project that helped classify it as a Certified LEED for Retail.  These are use of:

·         Energy Star appliances

·         Green power through purchasing green energy

·         Extensive day lighting

·         Regional Materials [based on material costs]

·         Reduction in lighting and use of salvaged materials.

Even the food is delivered in company-owned hybrid vehicles.  This earned the project a point for Sustainable Site Option E – Delivery Services.  This is one of two projects in Florida that fall under LEED for Retail and both are Pizza Fusion restaurants.  The beautiful interiors use Brazilian teak floors and feature walls and recycled materials for the countertops.  The commitment to green extends to the type of ingredients used in the restaurant right down to the plates and silverware used.  All food is 75% organic –- including the beer and wine offered. And to top it all off, they are the winner of the New Times People’s Choice Best Pizza.

APRIL BRANCH MEETING RECAP:
RAINWATER HARVESTING IN FLORIDA

Over 50 members and guests met at IRSC's Vero Beach Campus to hear guest speaker Russ Jackson, owner of The Jackson Company, talk about why people should consider rainwater harvesting in Florida and how to do it.

Mr. Jackson, who is LEED AP and a member of the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association, has been involved in rainwater harvesting and tank installation since a teenager working as a volunteer in Jamaica where he installed his first tank.  “Rain harvesting is as critical for Florida as it is in other areas of the world due to increasing demands on water supply globally”, he noted.

Mr. Jackson presented information on why and how residential and commercial property owners can harvest and store rainwater for household and commercial use such as irrigation and toilet flushing.  He discussed some of the LEED credits regarding water management and how rainwater can be applied to help building owners reduce potable water use.

He also showed various types of tank or water storage and filtration systems and told the audience that the major issues in owning and managing a system are in sedimentation control and filtration.  He stated that there are typically two ways of maintaining a system, one being chlorination, which he did not recommend due to chemical storage and UV filtration systems.  He assured the audience that a well-maintained system can produce water of drinking quality use, even if it is not used for that.   He did recommend, however, having a backup system to the rainwater harvesting systems in case of drought.

According to Jackson, there are currently no regulations in Florida regarding rainwater management and use; hence, engineers and municipalities tend to overdesign systems.  He advised that since more people are using them, more practical design and implementations of systems is occurring.

Mr. Jackson told the audience that the current leaders in rainwater harvesting technology are the Australians and the Germans, noting that all new buildings in Australia are required to have some sort of harvesting and containment system and that currently 60% of all households in Germany are on some sort of system.
While rainwater harvesting is familiar to long-time Florida and Caribbean island residents, it is still considered a “new technology” here in the States.
