Inside Sustainability
December 2009
Welcome to our last newsletter for 2009. Thank you for your ongoing support, and your collective efforts this year in making the world a better place to live and work. In this edition of Inside Sustainability, we look at some of the notable events that have taken place around the world, leading up to talks in Copenhagen. We also celebrate successes enjoyed by our clients along the way and share with you a number of case studies of best practice. Please note that from December 24 through to January 11, our offices will be closed and the EC3 Global team will be taking a well-deserved break with their families. As such, we will not be responding to emails or calls during this period, but look forward to speaking with you again upon our return. Have a safe and happy Festive Season. We wish you green tidings and cheer in 2010.

In this Issue Carbon Market Expo - The Dragon Roars
This year, the Australian Carbon Market Expo attracted 100 exhibitors and 800 delegates from 20 countries around the world. Reading like a roll call of visionaries, entrepreneurs and innovators, the business world collided with scientists and academia. This created a highly charged atmosphere that seemed to generate enough energy (and at times hot air) to power the Gold Coast for at least a decade. Biut what was most intriguing was hearing how China is positioning itself.

Buildings remain the single largest contributor to global warming; accounting for 48 per cent of annual US energy consumption (US Energy Information Administration). This figure is staggering in itself, but when put in a global context, power plant-generated electricity used to operate buildings rises to a staggering 76 per cent!
EC3 Global’s CEO Stewart Moore attended the Green Growth Business Summit in Korea, where he presented his views on the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable design.

EC3 Global’s DESTINO initiative arose from a need to address the problems of Climate Change and uncontrolled tourism development in various regions of Latin America. Launched at Mexico’s Mayan Riviera in November, the event was sponsored by Barceló Maya Beach - Colonial, The Water Park Xel-Ha and the Mayan Group. It was a forum to share experiences, recognize achievements and encourage more organizations to recognise the tangible benefits of exercising Corporate Social Responsibility.
When it comes to deep-cushioned comfort and guilt-free luxury, an increasing number of guests will readily tell you that their preference is to vacation where values are aligned. Launched this year, the Seed Award is the brainchild of EC3 Global and has been received with a high level of enthusiasm.
The inaugural 2009 Seed Awards attracted a bevy of entries from leading properties the world-over. With the current focus on Climate Change, it’s fitting that the winner is located in one of the world’s most spectacular – yet vulnerable – destinations.

With Queensland’s storm and bushfire season looming, Tourism Queensland is hosting a series of workshops which educate Queensland tourism operators on how to respond in the event of a weather related crisis such as flood, cyclone, bushfire and dust storm.
Over the last fortnight, EC3 Global has been working with Tourism Queensland to deliver three of the Weatherproof Your Business workshops with three more taking place in Airlie Beach, Mackay and the Sunshine Coast in early December.
The workshops coach participants on how to complete a Crisis Response Plan to ensure their business is able to respond and recover quickly from a crisis.
WWF-Australia is engaged in a new project aimed at increasing the number of Traditional Owners working in, and benefitting from, the booming multi-million dollar tourism industry in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
The project is a joint initiative of WWF-Australia, the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) and The Leading Travel Companies Conservation Foundation (TLTC).
