Heat and Light
Hello from the steaming South, where the summer sun shows its heat and light. In WingChun, we have the heat of training and the light of knowing, a complementary cycle. Consistency is the necessary path to more understanding, which we then again put into practice.
Thus, I have been in Atlanta upgrading the skills of our IAW members here, one who is highlighted below. It was a pleasure to spend over four hours on Saturday both seeing how everyone trained as well as inspiring new WingChun insights.
I'm happy to say — given my personal experience of the quality embodied by international practitioners of our unique system — that Sihing Kurk, Sihing Ayron and their students should feel proud as capable representatives of our worldwide family. Thanks for all your effort, focus and kindness. Until next time, keep improving yourselves.
Meanwhile, upon returning to the Headquarters in Berkeley, I look forward to motivating your ongoing process of unending progress. This means as much to me as advancing myself along the art. Let's each do our part and show up for one another as mutually supportive partners in Regular Classes and Special Events.
Because committed individuals forge a strong community.
Best Regards,

Next Graduation
Your next chance to graduate from Student Levels 1-8 of the IAW curriculum is during our upcoming WingChun Seminar on Sunday, August 29, 4:00-6:30 pm. This is the last opportunity to do so until the Fall Event Series with Sifu Klaus Brand. All are welcome to attend for intensive training which will identify and remove gaps in your knowledge. And for those of you who have attended class often and long enough — 2-3 times weekly for 2-3 months depending on your program — ask your Sihing if you are ready to advance.
Teacher Polling Results
Thanks to those of you who participated in our most recent polling. Those of you who haven't can still do so. But from the 40 votes thus far on what qualities define a good WingChun teachers, here are the top four results:
-
Inspires and motivates. 23% (9 votes)
-
Continues to learn and grow. 18% (7 votes)
-
Can communicate clearly. 18% (7 votes)
-
Embodies superior skills. 15% (6 votes)
These are great reminders for all Sihing and SIje (male and female WingChun instructors, respectively). They can be summarized as two affirmations:
-
I connect to my natural passion for WingChun, and always find the best practical means to share it with my students.
-
I demonstrate my highest expression of the art, but never cease to seek deeper dimensions to develop my self.
Student Spotlight
This time we feature Nathan Wood, a student of Sihing Ayron and Sihing Kurk from Atlanta, who came to visit the US Headquarters in April during the Spring Event Series with Sifu Klaus Brand. Last weekend, it was great to personally check his performance and, after determining his proficiency, grant him the 6th Student Level. Glad you are part of the IAW family. Read how he came to join us.
Fall Event Series
Mark you calendars. Sifu Klaus Brand is returning to the IAW-US for the 2010 Fall Event Series on October 15-24. Check our Events page and the September Newsletter for additional details.
