In light of the recent seismic activity here in California (5.4 Borrengo Springs, CA) and across the globe (Mexico, Canada, Chile, Haiti), it is helpful to remember that a large magnitude event can strike at anytime. The question is not if, but when the next earthquake will occur. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to ensure that you and your family are prepared.
Preparation for an earthquake includes several facets: Do you and your family have an emergency kit at your house? Do you keep a smaller short term survival kit in your car? More importantly than these basic points to consider, is if you have investigated the structures that you live, work, and play in. Is your home anchored to the foundation? Do you work in a building that is known to have inherent structural deficiencies? These may include unreinforced masonry, non-ductile concrete buildings, and older steel buildings.
