It's May!  Hip-Hip-Hooray!

When I think of May, I think of Snoopy leaping in a field of flowers, singing "It's May! It's May!".  I feel that way when the weather is soft and warm, when the roses are blooming and their fragrance fills the garden.

Not so much when the sirens are blaring, announcing yet another round of tornado warnings.  We were luckily spared any damage with the latest set of storms.

Midnight in the Garden (of Good and Evil?)
If you've been to the nursery lately, you have probably met our newest employee.  She is in charge of lizard killing, sun lolling, and garden patrolling.  She also sometimes greets people, rolls in the driveway, and lies on the porch.

Midnight showed up at the nursery last October, nursing four kittens.  I kept two of them at the nursery for the winter, sending them off to Mt. Vernon, AR, this Spring.

During the winter, Midnight disappeared for a couple weeks.  When she came back, she had a limp tail.  Apparently she had been hit and her spinal cord broken.

After her tail was amputated, she moved into the house with us, behaving as if she had always known the four dogs in residence.

She's now part of the team.  She comes to work with me every day and does her part to provide me a protein-rich diet.  Give her head a pat when you see her.

Mother's Day
I remember sneaking into the neighbors' yard with my sister to pick forbidden blossoms to make a bouquet for Mother.  I remember the smile of acknowledgement and love that hid the "Where did you get these?" frown.  And I remember the pride of having found something wonderful to give her.

We have some beautiful floral paintings and mixed planters that you don't have to steal.

Merrily,
Kathy

Herbal Hints
Sorrel -- A favorite European herb that hasn't found its way into many U.S. kitchens, sorrel adds snap to salads, soups, and sauces.  It has a sour bite that is a bit like citrus in its ability to heighten other flavors.

One of its best-know incarnations is in French Sorrel Soup, a bright taste of Spring. READ MORE.

Perennial Favorite
Wood Betony 'Pow Wow' --  Mixed Stachys coccinea 'Pow Wow' is a relative of Lambs Ears, the fuzzy ground cover.  It lacks fuzzy leaves but provides bright coral/brick red blossoms that rise above the dark green rosette leaves.

It has been used medicinally for many maladies including "elf fever" (caused by the stare of an irritated elf) for which there are few cures.  READ MORE
