Inside this issue... Where's Your Sense of Humor? Hi <<First Name>>, There are quizzes available for just about any subject on the Internet, so I just took one to see if I have a sense of humor. I do. My family shares the gift of laughter. When really funny moments happen, they become placeholders for time spent together. One moment involves a spot on my sister’s dress when our dad got married. Another surrounds Dad’s attempt to draw the Sistine Chapel during a game of Pictionary. It was architecturally correct, but it took him the entire evening to draw it. It was a bonding moment for he and my brother-in-law Jon. Studies show that laughter has numerous benefits for us. It provides a distraction, perspective, stress relief, and some even claim weight loss. A new DVD this week introduces us to the Apostles of Comedy. We meet four men who make their living by making people laugh, whether in churches, theaters, or on television. This combination of live performances and conversations with the comedians at home, at church, and with their families may even help you lose a pound or two! From the screening room, Angela Walker ChristianMovieNews.com P.S. Read our exclusive interview with Brad Stine and Jeff Allen, two of the featured apostles of comedy. Apostles Of Comedy - DVD Get ready for laughter of a Higher Power! Apostles Of Comedy is an inventive mix of four comedians and an exploration into their lives as men of faith and how they express their faith through their comedy. The film weaves live performances and documentary footage following the comedians on stage, in their homes, churches and in a "no-holds-barred" conversation. While their humor may be squeaky clean and imbued with faith and inspiration, it never loses its edge, which makes it relevant to today's audience. Industry Interview Christians in Cinema: Jeff Allen & Brad Stine by Angela Walker When I sat down for a conversation with two of America’s favorite Christian comedians, I expected to laugh and enjoy it, but didn’t expect a philosophical discussion about truth, culture and Jerry Falwell. Brad Stine and Jeff Allen take their comedy on the road to theaters, churches, and television. They point out funny legalities and idiosyncratic behaviors of our Christian subculture, and if you don’t like it, maybe it hits too close to home. How much of your routine is planned vs. improvised? Jeff: Maybe 95%. I don’t sit down and write a list where it’s word for word for word, but I’ve been doing it long enough that I know where I’ll start and where I’ll end it. I look at the clock and everything else comes along with it. Sometimes the audience dictates that I do something different, if there seems to be a relationship forming, and then I’ll shift directions. But I know what I’m starting with and I’m ending with. But it’s all stuff I’ve done before. How often do you add new material? Brad: I think most comics go in with the set that they expect to do. They have standbys that work, and they’re being hired to succeed; make people laugh and enjoy themselves. I think that a lot of times the audience kind of dictates it. Sometimes you get into a scenario where someone says something interesting or out of the blue something happens and you begin to comment about that. It becomes this sort of improv moment and ... The group of comics is formed out of four men who do not use inappropriate language or subjects in their act. Throughout the DVD they interview the comedians and their family members about their lives. This gives the program an interesting twist and a look into the serious side of their lives. Each comedian has his own jokes that have been taken from moments in their own lives to make the audience laugh. I found myself laughing out loud many times. I don’t think a child under 12 would understand most of the jokes or may not understand that they are joking. Dove is happy to award the Dove "Family-Approved" Seal for ages 12 and up. Fireproof by Tiaan Kruger "I got to see "Fireproof" in a pre-screening in my area and have to say, the Kendrick brothers outdid themselves. I had very high expectations for the movie and was not disappointed. I appreciated the humor they wrote into the script, and with great acting it was pulled off with absolutely perfect comedic timing. I also found that a lot of the issues the brothers took on around marriages they did not beat around the bush, but went straight for the heart of the issues... All said and done, Kirk Cameron does a stellar job, the filming is done beautifully and it has a very purposeful story. Go support this film in the theater and when it comes out on DVD!" Pray - DVD by Dillon Burroughs "I was pleasantly surprised with Pray. It offered some genuine scares without resorting to graphic violence in any way. The story offered a fun Halloween alternative that I highly recommend for any teen audience. It includes Christian references, yet is not cliche or preachy as is sometimes the case in such films. At under 90 minutes, the film can also be easily used in church youth ministry settings or for a home group. I'm really looking forward to this team's next film, Pray 2, for another thrill-ride this Halloween season!" [ Read more... ] Buyer Review Rating:
