What to take on your "BPM Campout"
Have you ever started something where you knew the result you wanted, but weren’t exactly sure how to get there? Recently, I took my son on a camping trip through Adventure Guides and we both knew we wanted to have a good time. However, I wasn’t exactly sure what to take in order to make sure we both had fun. Luckily, we had the guidance and leadership of a great tribe leader. He made sure we were prepared and he ultimately made our camping trip successful. It made me realize how important it is to have a partner to help guide you through your BPM implementation when all the day-to-day activities that you balance come into play.
I equate it to an insurance policy that you’ve taken out to hedge against all the noise that you face in your day job. And to me, that’s exactly why you use BPM consultants for some of your more strategic IT projects. The consultants have the experience. BPM consulting firms are all about BPM – and not about being all things to all people. We know that there are things you will need, that there are certain things you should do while on your “BPM Campout” that your team may not be aware of, and more importantly what not to do. Consultants basically know what you don’t yet know and know how to ensure your BPM experience is successful. And that’s what is so helpful.
So what should a good BPM consulting firm bring to your “BPM Campout?” In the tradition of a good campout list, let’s number them out for easy reading:
1. Experience: If nothing else, you should look for those that have done this before. BPM consultants are specialized and they “really get” BPM. Ultimately their experience will increase the value of your BPM investment and give you access to best practices, improve your time-to-market and speed user adoption.
2. Success: Call around. Ask your BPM software vendor. Every product suite has its own strengths and weaknesses and you want staff that knows what those are before they start your project. It’s hard to imagine the big software guys matching this focus because they have so many customers, and so many products, that they’ll always depend on specialists to augment their teams.
3. Methodology: It’s important to have the right methodology foundation and tactics to get BPM projects successfully deployed. In order to improve the odds of success for a BPM initiative, your organization must understand the challenges inherent in the different stages of the BPM project life cycle.
4. Deliverables: Take a look before the “BPM campout” starts and make sure you’re aligned with your consultant’s timeline and list of deliverables. You might have a few things of your own that you want to add to the list. A well defined timeline and list of deliverables helps improve your chance of success.
5. Exit Strategy: I’m firmly believe that you own your own destiny, Whether that is outsourced or inhouse, so you have to prepare accordingly for it. A consulting firm is only a temporary solution to guide you on the track of success. Once they’ve done their job and equipped you with the skills to be successful, it will be up to you to stay on track.
