As director, Sharp built the largest green campus organization in the world. The program's efforts were funded largely by the savings it produced—the essence of sustainability. POWERHOUSE Photographs by Russell B. Phillips
At the turn of the 20th century Sears, Roebuck and Co. built a facility on the near west side of Chicago to provide for its mail-order service and office buildings. Providing the energy and heat for all the buildings on the 55-acre site, the Power Station was more than three million square feet then, the largest business building in the world. Photographer Russell B. Phillips documents the transformation of the Sears Power House from a massive and riveting, outdated industrial space to a new, adapted reuse as a green charter high school serving Chicago’s North Lawndale community. Brushwood. Exhibition runs through June 28, 2010.
