Why Infrastructure Matters
100% to the inboxWe recently posted a case study on the MailChimp Blog about how Photojojo made the transition from using their own in-house email servers to MailChimp. They eventually got to 100% inbox deliverability, but we had to work for it.

If you manage your emails in-house, and you've been thinking of going to an ESP for its infrastructure (whether MailChimp or not), you might find this useful.

Email Delivery Secrets

Email Server Setup GuideStill think you'd be better off managing your own email servers instead of going with an ESP? Fine.

Brandon, our Deliverability Engineer, just wrote the ultimate how-to guide for your high volume email delivery servers. This is for IT professionals who want to know about ISP throttling, authentication, MTA settings, and all that other geeky stuff.

Project Omnivore

Project OmnivoreIn late 2008, MailChimp Labs kicked off Project Omnivore. We knew that with our growth rate (discussed here as well), there'd be no way we could keep hiring humans to review new users and monitor for abuse. Our goal was to create an autonomous system that could scan for bad behavior across hundreds of thousands of users, and alert us to problems.

We used an nVidia supercomputer, then a cluster of Amazon EC2 servers running for 20 days to scan 61 trillion data points, and the result is a product that can detect -- and even predict -- abusive behavior 24/7. Plus a whole lot more. Read the background at: Project Omnivore Declassified

Yahoo Ends Relationship with Goodmail

Laura Atkins posted over on her blog about how Yahoo has chosen to stop offering preferred delivery to Goodmail certified email. She says:

“Quite frankly, I am unsurprised by this. My impression of Goodmail has always been they never really understood the role of a certifying agency. For any certifying agency to be successful, they must continually monitor certified customers and enforce standards. Goodmail’s initial certification process was fine, but they never seemed to follow through on the monitoring and enforcement.”

Did you catch that part about "monitoring and enforcement"? That's really hard stuff to do. ESPs (like MailChimp) have a similar obligation to monitor users, in order to protect our deliverability. More on that...

Timewarp and Geo Targeting
Our MailChimp v5 launch got a write up on Mashable a couple weeks ago. In case you missed it, there are some super awesome features included, like:

Why'd My Open Rates Drop?
By now, we all know what our average open and click rates are and how they compare to others in your industry, right? If not, check out this article, or just bookmark ChimpCharts.

So what do you do if you discover that suddenly, your rates just dropped dramatically?

Here's an article on how to use your MailChimp stats to troubleshoot strange anomolies and phenomena in your email performance.

How I Use Flowtown
Flowtown logoHave you ever heard of Flowtown? It's an interesting social network service that lets you enter someone's email address, then get back a lot of their public profile information. Whether they're on twitter, their age, gender, location, etc. They've actually integrated with MailChimp, via our API, so that you can segment your list on demographic information.
Here's how I use it (it's probably not what you think)

Hope you found this issue useful.

Sincerely,

Ben ("can't dance") Chestnut

1,000 per hour
Smashing Magazine recently launched a new email newsletter. Well, sort of. They posted a challenge: if they got their list up to 10,001 subscribers, then they'd launch the newsletter.

Did it work? Oh yes. They got about 1,000 signups per hour on the first day (see how they used the MailChimp chiclet feature, plus prizes)

20 Million/Day
Seems like every time we go to any email marketing conference or event, people want to know one thing:
Can MailChimp handle large lists too?

Salesforce logo
New Salesforce App
We've got a pretty nifty Salesforce app in the works. If you're interested, we're asking people to download the beta and give us a little feedback. Details in the MailChimp Jungle's Salesforce group...

Automagical Artwork
Did you attend SXSW? See any fanciful unicorns, or automagical steampunk monkeys? That was us. Here's the backstory.

Was This Useful?
When people ask me for email marketing advice, I tell them, "Don't send anything until you have something actually useful to say."

Simple advice. But useful content's the hardest part of email marketing.

Anyway, I've been sending the MonkeyWrench (sporadically) for a few years now. So I'd love some feedback (gulp):
