Monthly Book Review!
Matched by Ally Condie

In a not so distant future, Cassia Reyes lives in a seemingly perfect world in which everything has been studied and the role of choice has been nearly extinguished.  She, along with every other member of her society, are monitored regularly in order to heighten their chances of success within this world.  The rulers of this society--better known as officials-- can even view Cassia's dreams on the nights she's scheduled to be monitored with dream tags.  Cassia knows that her job, future spouse, and most of the people she interacts with will be arranged based on data collected and analyzed by the officials.  She even knows when she, like every other member of society, will die: this will occur on the night of her 80th birthday after a ceremony attended by family.  Cassia respects the order of this world because nearly everyone she knows are more or less content with the way this society works.  Prior to her society, no other race or civilization has come close to the near perfect life her society can offer.

A downward spiral occurs when Cassia discovers that she might have two males she is meant to be matched with.  The first male, Xander, is one of her closest friends from childhood.  The second male, Ky, is an acquaintence but appears to be hiding secrets.  Her official match is Xander, so why does she find herself falling in love with Ky?

This is an excellent book for teens and pre-teens.  Older teens will enjoy the romance and Cassia's struggle to understand her future in a world where most of her life has been decided.  Pre-teens will appreciate the plot and Cassia's likeability as the main character.  Parents will also be pleased to discover that there is little objectionable content, but they may want to read the book with their kids and be prepared to discuss some of its heavy issues.  In short, "Matched" appears to nearly all females.  Cassia is a vivid character who develops from a blind follower to an independent thinker within its three hundred plus pages.  Readers who enjoyed this book will be pleased to learn that "Matched" is merely the first book of a trilogy, with the second one due to be released later this year.
