Dear Industry Partner
Welcome to the spring edition and my first opportunity to preface the 'Member Connect' e-newsletter. I'll begin by thanking the PCB team, our stakeholders and you, our valued membership base, for your strong support as I begin my tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Bureau. PCB is foremost a membership and stakeholder organisation; without your help we cannot do the great job we do.
This financial year in particular will highlight the business events industry within the local community like never before. Not only will meetings such as CHOGM bring to light the significance of business events, Western Australia will become the nation's meetings hub during the next 12 months with business events expected to inject more than $102 million into the State's economy.
Over 50,000 delegates are expected to attend a total of 91 conventions, exhibitions and corporate incentive programs booked into the State in the 2011-2012 financial year. This is the first time in the Bureau's history that we will pass the magical $100 million mark in projected delegate expenditure over a 12-month period - and this figure does not include CHOGM which alone is expected to inject more than $50 million into the Western Australian economy (view media coverage here).
Needless to say, the PCB team is in high spirits heading into this financial year. We expect to retain strong support from our members by providing tangible cooperative marketing opportunities, as we continue to deliver the highest return on investment of any Australian convention bureau (AACB comparisons report).
In response to member input at our cooperative member marketing meeting last June, PCB's 'Asia Campaign' has kicked-off this month, underpinned by a dedicated microsite which is complemented by an extensive marketing and advertising schedule that will drive traffic to the site. Please see the piece below for the mechanics of this substantial campaign that will uncover solid, qualified leads in both the corporate and association sectors within Singapore and Jakarta.
I look forward to a prosperous and exciting few months ahead.
Kind regards

Paul Beeson
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

PCB's Asia Campaign launched
PCB has just launched an Asian marketing campaign in Singapore and Jakarta targeting meeting planners from the association, corporate meeting and incentive markets. We're challenging planners - who think they know Perth - to 'Redefine the boundaries' of their next business event and rediscover Perth.
A targeted print and online advertising campaign will drive traffic to a dedicated microsite - www.redefineperth.com - until 23 September. Registrants will be qualified to attend the in-market trade and corporate cocktail events: 4 October in Singapore, and 6 October in Jakarta. The events will showcase Perth and Western Australia as a business events destination, with WA wine and entertainment. All attendees will be eligible to win great prizes including a $5,000 natural gold nugget from the Perth Mint and Perth return economy flights with the campaign airline sponsors, Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines.
PCB is delighted to be partnering with Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Esplanade Hotel Group and Burswood Entertainment Complex in this inaugural campaign which is likely to be an annual event on the PCB cooperative marketing calendar. For further information, please contact PCB's Loretta DeStefani on (08) 9218 2904 or ldestefani@pcb.com.au.

PCB connects with clients
PCB thanks local hosts for $102M!
PCB hosted a function at the State Theatre Centre of WA to celebrate passing the magical $100 million mark in projected delegate expenditure over a 12 month period (this financial year, 2011-12). To mark this results milestone, the Bureau held a 'thank you' function for local conference hosts who are the key to WA's growing status as a business events destination.
The local hosts were guests of the Bureau at the world premiere performance of Tim Winton's debut play 'Rising Water' at the State Theatre Centre. In his address to the gathering, the Bureau's CEO Paul Beeson reminded us that having an active community of local hosts who are keen to showcase WA and its expertise across a broad range of industries underpins the success of the business events sector.
"The local hosts are the people who put their hands up to host conferences, so we are indebted to them. They are passionate about showcasing the achievements of their particular industry sectors to the wider world," he said.
Thank you to all those who attended the successful event; we hope you enjoyed Tim Winton's debut play.

Associations Forum
PCB exhibited at the 6th annual Associations Forum National Conference 2011 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, 27-28 July. Over 450 delegates, exhibitors and speakers attended. On the 'Perth - The Space to Connect' stand was PCB's Business Development Manager Karen Iber, Tracey Baker of Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Lauren Perkins of Burswood Entertainment Complex and Jeanette Friedrich of the Esplanade Hotels Group.
Pleased exhibitors reported that the event is about long-term relationship and profile building rather than gathering direct leads, and that being exposed to a large number of associations was invaluable. It's also great to schedule appointments with east coast contacts that are usually too busy during larger trade shows such as AIME. PCB is exploring ways that we can further promote WA at Associations Forum in 2012.

Albany Famil

|

|
| In Albany: Kristina (Albany Visitor Centre), Narelle (AEG Ogden's), Tracey (PCB) and Iain Mac Kinnes (Kooka's Catering). |
PCB's Director of Membership and PR, Tracey Cinavas-Prosser, undertook a two-day familiarisation tour of Albany looking at a variety of venues including the new Albany Entertainment Centre.
Whilst in Albany, Tracey presented an overview of the WA business events industry to a group of industry representatives, including the Albany Chamber of Commerce, hoteliers and local government.
Tracey was escorted throughout her visit by former board member and PCO Kate Lown (formerly Kate Clarke of Congress West). Ms Lown is now a resident of Albany and Tracey said it was great to be able to tap into her wealth of knowledge of not only the business events world but also of industry in the area.
"I thought Albany was beautiful; it really earns its tag 'Amazing Albany'" said Tracey. "PCB markets the whole of WA to the business events market and as a regional destination, Albany is ideal for delegates seeking a unique location with plenty of events infrastructure, accommodation and attractions."

Novotel Famil
Tracey also escorted a group of east coast buyers and meetings planners on a whirlwind tour of Novotel's WA properties, 24 - 28 June. View some of the media coverage here.
Swan Valley Tours organised a day in the Swan Valley sampling some great drops at Sandalford Wines and local beer at Feral Brewery. Guests stayed at Novotel Vines Resort and took part in a night shoot with Laser Ranger, followed by a delicious six-course degustation menu.
After an indigenous art class with Urban Indigenous Tours, the group enjoyed a "Beef and Beers Cooking Class" at The Old Brewery, a real treat for the gourmands in the group. Guests toured the brand new State Reception Centre and Fraser's Restaurant in Kings Park before checking in at the Novotel Langley Perth for dinner.
Guests then headed north to the Ningaloo Reef Resort, where they swam amongst the whale sharks, enjoyed delicious seafood and cooled down with cocktails. Special thanks to Ocean Eco Adventures and Windward Balloon Adventures, and the management and staff at the Novotel properties for supporting this impressive program.

The Association Congress is one of the most significant association conferences in Europe, and Australia was the headline sponsor of the 5th annual Association Congress in London, 18-19 July. PCB was an exhibition partner of the Australia Association Project along with Tourism Australia and other Australian bureaux.
Representing PCB was Business Tourism and Investment Manager from the Government of WA office in London, Kylie Adams. Over 224 delegates attended the congress, an increase of 20% on the 2010 congress. The Australia booth was well visited during the networking breaks, and a number of leads were received.

They've also over the ferry terminal ticketing office and souvenir store where they'll set up a mini tourist bureau.
Captain Rod invited the Queen to go for a cruise to showcase the Peel Region whilst here for CHOGM but unfortunately an official letter from Buckingham Palace said that she although she was appreciative, she will be too busy to accept.

Not long to go! CHOGM 2011
The 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is drawing near, so if you need to find out more about this event - held throughout Perth, 28-30 October - then do not hesitate to visit the official CHOGM 2011 website, or visit Tourism Western Australia's website, which contains great information on all the events happening in Perth during this time, from sporting events to art exhibitions.

St Georges Tce officially opened
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi officially opened the enhancement works on St Georges Terrace on Wednesday 3 August. The PCB team attended; you can see the photo album here. Over the past 11 months the City of Perth has spent $15 million on transforming Perth's premier street into an attractive and pedestrian-oriented environment. The Council has created a 'sense of arrival' in the CBD, creating a more inviting, relaxing and suitable place for alfresco dining.

Wildflowers setting Western Australia ablaze
Western Australia has the largest collection of wildflowers in the world - more than 12,000 species carpet the state with their vivid beauty and lush scent, 60 per cent of which are found nowhere else in the world. June to November is WA's wildflower season, with Springtime bringing the biggest blooms. It's big business for WA, as flower-spotters rush in from all over the globe.
Explore luscious smelling blossoms everywhere, from Kings Park in Perth (culminating in the Kings Park Wildflower Festival), to the rolling hills of the Darling Scarp, from Joondalup and Cervantes just north of Perth up to Kalbarri National Park in Western Australia's Coral Coast. The South West also attracts many visitors and this year the annual Mount Barker Celebration of Wildflowers is back again running 1 September - 15 October.

Perth Cultural Centre develops
A 36-metre LED screen, feature lighting and a new children's play space will be introduced into the Perth Cultural Centre, the space that links Perth's central business district with its cultural heart of Northbridge. Works will be completed in time for the People's Space held in the PCC during CHOGM in October. A range of feature lighting for the trees and heritage façades will add interest to the precinct, as will shade and colourful signage for the Urban Orchard.

Construction of new Perth Airport terminal to start
The construction of a new $120 million domestic terminal will commence this month next to the international terminal, the first in a raft of major projects to transform Perth Airport in the coming years. It has been designed to meet the increased needs of regional and interstate air services; Perth Airport is recognised as the fastest growing Australian capital city airport with a 9.4 per cent growth rate during 2010/11. Construction is expected to be completed in December 2012.

Ningaloo Coast receives world heritage listing
604,500 hectares of the Ningaloo Coast have received a world heritage listing, the highest level of international recognition of the region's natural beauty and biological diversity. Many rare and diverse plants and animals are found within the Cape Range, and a variety of marine mammals, turtles, manta rays and one of the world's largest aggregations of whale sharks reside in the marine park.

Arrivals & Departures
Daly joins the Bureau
PCB welcomes Lia Daly as Senior Business Development Manager. Lia possesses a wealth of Business Development experience incorporating global hotel brands, as well as the resource and technology sectors. With a double degree in Hospitality and Tourism, Lia is currently studying a Graduate Diploma in Marketing. Responsible for the association sector, Lia's high energy and passion are focused upon ensuring innovation in delivering a complete WA experience. Look out for Lia at the next PCB member event and come say hi!
PCB's New London rep
Kylie Adams has been appointed to the role of Business Tourism and Investment Manager, to represent Perth Convention Bureau in the Western Australian Government Office (Agent General's office) in London. Some of you may know Kylie; she is currently the Managing Director of Pure Tourism here in Perth and was the Chair of YATA for the past four years. She will replace Rethi Scaife who is returning to Perth to take over Kara Coote's role at PCB, as Business Development Manager for the Corporate and Incentive market.
PCEC appoints East Coast rep
Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) has announced its appointment of a representative in Melbourne. Sally Black, PCEC's long-standing Sales Manager for Exhibitions and Special Events will be heading to Melbourne this month to represent PCEC on the east coast of Australia. Chief Executive Officer, Dean Lee stated the move is an important strategic step in strengthening the venue's presence in primary source markets outside Western Australia.
IHG staff on the move
Michael Fontein has progressed quickly since joining Burswood's Hotel Sales team in 2008 as a Business Development Executive. Michael moved on to become a manager, then Senior Business Development Manager, before taking on his most recent role of Business Development Director for InterContinental Perth Burswood and Holiday Inn Perth Burswood.
Lulu Fox joined Burswood's Hotel Sales team in March this year as Business Development Manager and in July was promoted to Senior Business Development Manager for InterContinental Perth Burswood and Holiday Inn Perth Burswood. In her new role, Lulu will continue to manage a portfolio of Key Corporate and Entertainment accounts, whilst gaining two Business Development Executives as direct reports.
CMS promotes new Events Coordinator
Jessica Bland has recently been officially appointed as Events Coordinator at CMS Events. Jess started with CMS late in 2010 initially on work experience where she flourished and then shifted into a part time role. She was very involved with the inaugural Perth Event Show and has now been appointed in a full time role. Jess is a great asset and a testament to her events management training at the Central Institute of Technology.
Mirvac's movements
Mirvac Hotels and Resorts is delighted to welcome Kirsten Lopez, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing WA and Christine Francis, Business Development Manager - Conference and Events WA.
Woosnam joins Crystal Swan
The Crystal Swan team has a new Functions Coordinator, Tanya Woosnam, who is certainly no stranger to the industry. Tanya has previously worked for Oceanic Cruises for two years as Functions Manager, and was then employed at the East Fremantle Yacht Club as the Events and Wedding Coordinator. Tanya then left the work force to have a baby and now she is back and thrilled at the opportunity with the Crystal Swan as "I love the water and running functions on the river is so unique!"
Beaumonde's five fresh faces
Beaumonde Catering is off to an exciting 2011 so far with two new Head Chefs, Kirk Hood and Nick Donlin. The sales team has welcomed three new faces including Head of Sales, Melissa Harkins, plus two new Sales & Function Managers, Michael Male and Liz May.
Cott welcomes Cody
Not many Perth chefs can lay claim to cooking for Canadian heart-throb and fresh seafood devotee Keanu Reeves (although many women would love to). Cottesloe Beach Hotel's new head chef Coby Cockburn can - he was the star's personal chef for three weeks in 2002 when he cooked for about 45 of Keanu's family and friends on Double Island in Queensland, where he filmed The Matrix. In recent months, the CBH has taken a new direction, catering to a more mature demographic, with plans in action for an upscale garden bar offering dining, due for summer.
New faces at Rendezvous
Rendezvous Perth Hotel has appointed a new Manager Conference and Events, Steven Aris. Steven joins the team with experience as a Cruise Director, with Star and Norwegian Cruise Lines and Director of entertainment with Club Mediterranean and Shangri-La.
A new Manager Sales Corporate, CJ Clavis, has also been appointed. New to the hotel industry, CJ brings a vast array of Business Development and Sales experience having formally looked after corporate exhibition accounts for The Walt Disney Company, and more recently Corporate Sales for EVENT Cinemas in New Zealand. CJ's philosophy for corporate business is about "opening relationships" rather than "closing sales".
