News from Neil Moore Collectively, below are some announcements that were made both at the San Jose, CA conference and the 2020 Vision Tour that I just attended in Charlotte, North Carolina. Neil announced that he has retired the sweater vest! It’s really not his style, but the video producers had kind of locked him into that professorial “look” for the student home materials. He prefers colorful shirts and funky shoes. Neil is creating a new music genre for humanity. He calls it Mass Jazz. His vision is to take jazz music and make it accessible, understandable and enjoyable to everyone. He is in the process of creating a curriculum for the Simply Music program. Teachers were treated to a taste of this curriculum even though it is still in the creation process. It was amazing. Another area Neil is developing further is the accompaniment program. Soon teachers will be able to add what Neil terms a “river” that runs alongside the existing Accompaniment programs which teaches how to add embellishments to our chord accompaniments, adding depth and richness. We did some fun exercises along these lines in a workshop with Neil. If that’s not enough projects for one person, he also plans to win a Grammy in 2012 for Best New Jazz Artist. He has his journey from here to there all mapped out, including 3 - 8 hours of practice per day and private lessons with a jazz pianist. Neil is traveling the world to meet with as many teachers as possible. He is calling this project the “2020 Vision Tour”. In Neil’s words: “At each of these gatherings, I will be talking about shifts that are occurring in the culture of music education, how we can create a new possibility inside of that future, as well as how Simply Music will be changing to position ourselves for that new future. An essential outcome of these gatherings will be the re-writing of a new Foundation Statement that will reflect the collective input of the Simply Music teacher body.” And he still takes the time to talk individually with teachers over the phone. Neil is truly a remarkable man. We are all blessed to be a part of this program, and to be either experiencing or sharing Neil’s vision.
