Thanksgiving Jokes
1. Happy Thanksgiving!
|

|
Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has officially been an annual tradition since 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26. As a federal and popular holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season.
The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated to give thanks to God for guiding them safely to the New World. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, providing enough food for 13 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The feast consisted of fish (cod, eels, and bass) and shellfish (clams, lobster, and mussels), wild fowl (ducks, geese, swans, and turkey), venison, berries and fruit, vegetables (peas, pumpkin, beetroot and possibly, wild or cultivated onion), harvest grains (barley and wheat), and the Three Sisters: beans, dried Indian maize or corn, and squash. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings" - days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

GMOs: 10 Simple Questions
(and some surprising answers)
|
The News Journal ran a feature article on organic food and GMO/Non-GMO food on Tuesday, 11/15/11. The article discussed both sides of the GMO/Non-GMO debate and highlighted the efforts of organizations working throughout the U.S. to require labeling for GMO foods. Polls regularly show that 80-90% of consumers want GMO food labeled! Article content:
"These days, you can find out plenty about the food you eat - calories, sodium content, even the country where it was produced.
But do you know if the cereal in your breakfast bowl is made with genetically modified corn and sweeteners? Does it matter?
The answer depends on whom you ask.
Some environmental and food safety advocates argue it's critical to know whether food is grown using genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. They believe GMOs have the potential to negatively impact our health, from the functioning of the digestive system to how the body fends off pathogens.
But the federal government doesn't require manufacturers to label products made with GMOs..."

9. Reasons To Buy Organic Food
|
"Organically grown food is your best way of reducing exposure to toxins used in conventional agricultural practices. These toxins include not only pesticides, many of which have been federally classified as potential cancer-causing agents, but also heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and solvents like benzene and toluene. |
Minimizing exposure to these toxins is of major benefit to your health. Heavy metals damage nerve function, contributing to diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lower IQ, and also block hemoglobin production, causing anemia. Solvents damage white cells, lowering the immune system’s ability to resist infections."
Agricultural chemicals used on conventionally grown foods (which are used to kill bacteria, fungi, insects, weeds, rodents and other organisms) have also been shown to the harmful to mitochondria, the energy production factories of our cells.
Organically grown foods have been shown to be significantly higher in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients essential for health: 27% more vitamin C, 29.3% more magnesium and 21.1% more iron. Deficiency of vitamin C, magnesium, iron and other vitamins and minerals (classified as essential nutrients because they are required by our bodies for health and normal functioning) can result in low energy, anxiety, headaches, impaired immune function, impaired wound healing, increased frequency of colds and infections, elevated blood pressure, heart attacks ( the #1 killer in the U.S.), increased rates of cancer (the #2 killer in the U.S.), and many other healthcare concerns.

Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said,
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."
