Getting Social with Email Marketing

Many small business owners send out a regular newsletter as a cheap and effective way of keeping in touch with clients & prospects and a regular reminder of what they do and what they sell (and if you're not sending out a regular email newsletter, you should be!).

But, did you know that email marketing is becoming increasingly social? By that we mean that you can integrate your email marketing activities into your social networking activity. As subscribers to Savvy Marketing Tips, you've probably noticed that we use Mailchimp to send out our regular newsletter and blog posts. But you may not have noticed that Mailchimp also integrates social media into its interface.

How does it work?
What all this social media integration means is that you can automate letting your online networks know when you send out your latest email newsletter – it notifies the most popular social networks such as Twitter & Facebook. By integrating Twitter into Mailchimp, when you send out your newsletter, it will send a 'tweet' to your network to let them know your latest newsletter is out. Other functions include the ability to incorporate your Twitter profile into your newsletter template, track the number of people who have re-tweeted your newsletter and allow your readers to share your campaign on their own social networks with a social sharing merge tag. The other great feature of Mailchimp is that you can send out your blog posts to your email database in daily, weekly or monthly digests. This is called 'RSS to email'.

What does this mean?
All this great functionality means that extending your reach and your audience is so much easier and you can encourage others to share your newsletter with their network and hopefully get more subscribers! Furthermore, by sending your blog posts out to your newsletter subscribers, they get additional content that they may not have seen and it also encourages more activity and comments on your blog. You can read more about Mailchimp's social media functionality here.

Mailchimp isn't the only provider to integrate social media into their email platform. Others include Aweber who also has an 'RSS to email' function, and Sign-up.to who offer a separate social media service which includes posting clients newsletters to the main social networks and managing their profiles on the popular sites. However, many of the other popular email marketing providers such as Vertical Response, Constant Contact and Campaign Monitor have yet to include social media functionality.

So if you already send out a regular newsletter, then start thinking about how you can get it to more people through the social networking that you do and of course, increase your list of subscribers!
