Some of you may remember the last time Jamie came to town. In May we poured an eye-popping Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée that had us giddy about the opportunity to showcase more of The Sorting Table portfolio. Well, on November 23rd, Jamie Adams will be back at The Boiler Room to host a wine dinner focused on the wines of France.
From Alsace, Olivier Humbrecht's biodynamic Pinot Blanc is actually a more classically named Pinot d'Alsace. It is comprised of Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc originating from two vineyards in Rotenberg and Herrenweg. The blend preserves the acidity of Rotenberg with the puncuating flavors of Herrenweg, and at 13.7%, the wine has some weight and finish. In Alsace no meal can begin without Pinot Blanc to whet the palate!
Bernard Moreau is a name synonymous with Chassagne-Montrachet. Bernard now works with his two sons making resonant and pure Chardonnay from 14 well placed hectares of Premier Cru vineyards. The wines are made in a minimally interventionist style, as Bernard looks to let Chassagne's characteristic limestone soil put it's mark in the bottle. It is a pleasure, indeed, to present Bernard's Premier Cru Maltroie with this level of clarity and texture.
Dauvergne Ranvier is still in its infancy. François Dauvergne's and Jean-François Ranvier's first vintage was in 2007, and that without owning any grapes, any cellar, let alone a winery! Both had spent significant time at other wineries and had called on as many as 50 different cellars. In 2004 Dauvergne Ranvier selected the best of them to express terroir from a stunning array of Rhône sites. Their 2009 Saint Joseph is dense and dark, but still finishes with freshness. It would seem this is a pair to watch closely.
Although the Barrot family has a 600 year history in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Julien Barrot's first vintage was in 2003. In taking over Domaine La Barroche he was tremendously fortunate. With his healthy stock of old vine Granache (some over 100 yeards old) the average vine age is some 60 years! He even counts the inimitable Château Rayas among his neighbors. In very short time Julien has bottled intensely perfumed and tightly packed Châteauneuf that has his star rising.
With fall hovering around us and game season about to begin, the menu is sure to feature muscovy duck and yorkshire piglets from Iowa as well as heirloom squash and house ground polenta. The wines are truly a delight, so accommodating a menu will be exhilarating.
