SGEntrepreneurs

Issue #10

#SGEReaders,

Let’s face it – most of us who either dream about or are currently running our own firms do so because we want to be the boss. We want the power to control our own path instead of being just another nameless, faceless drone that makes up the fabric of the 6pm crowd at Raffles Place MRT after each workday.

You’re the boss...really?

When you’re a start-up, you’re the boss, the manager, the coffeboy, the motivator – basically you’re every worker in the company. Your private and professional lives have merged and you can’t just leave work at the doorstep. No, you don’t have that luxury.

You think about work 24/7. At the back of your mind will be that constant nagging fear that you’re not being productive enough, not harnessing your resources well enough...you might even worry about the fact that your competitors are someday gonna whoop your a** whilst you weren’t looking. If you aren’t careful, your fears might even eat you up alive.

Those who hang their titles of leadership like halos round their heads have so obviously gotten it wrong. “The boss” is just another title – what it takes is a vision to see where things are going, the courage to stare at your problems in the face and the ability to pat your empty pocket with humour.

Being the boss of your own firm represents the willingness to sacrifice part of your life for something that seems to have potential but whose conclusion only leads to a question mark?
