Last week Kelley was met by Theodora, a wood fairy assigned by Bronson to assist Kelley in her quest to open a soap supply shop, Soapies, in the town of Freedom. Theodora was able to read Kelley's thoughts and to communicate in kind with her and for the first time in her life, Kelley had a true friend.
As they entered the outskirts of Freedom, Kelley grew increasingly more nervous and scared. Theodora, sensing this, grasped Kelley's hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "Fear not, Princess. All will be well. I promise."
Kelley smiled and as she had many times since meeting Theodora, she sent a silent thanks to Bronson for the gift of friendship he had sent her way. And then a thought struck her - "wait a second, you're a fairy. Won't the people of Freedom freak out when they see you?!"
Theodora giggled at this thought and then in the blink of an eye, she morphed into a human form just slightly shorter than Kelley. Her flower and ivy dress was replaced by a blue peasant top and a ground length skirt made of checkered gingham over which she wore a white apron. Her hair was braided and wrapped around her head with small sprigs of flower tucked randomly here and there.
"This is my muse - what humans see when they look at me. Only other magical creatures like fairies, sprites, elves, gnomes, and other woodland dwellers are able to see me in my natural state. As we've been walking, while you've seen me as I truly am, the passersby have seen the muse that I've projected."
Kelley was astonished. "How am I able to see you in your true from since I'm not an elf, a fairy, or anything like that?"
"You are a Princess Becoming," Theodora stated.
It was becoming clear to Kelley that being a Princess was FAR more involved than she first had thought. But before she could give this much more thought Theodora, once again in fairy form, set off walking and they quickly covered the final distance into the town.
Reaching the town square, the girls stopped to look around. Kelley had never seen so many people in one spot at a time and she stood in amazement as the swarm of humanity swirled around her. It was so incredibly noisy. And absolutely filthy. The streets were rivers of mud and a foul slop that was obviously made from the contents of hundreds of chamber pots combined with the droppings of the myriad of horses and other barnyard animals that were everywhere. A rank odor hung like a heavy fog over the town - and every person that passed added another layer of gag-inducing odor to this. It was beyond disgusting. If ever there was a need for soap and perfumes, it was with these people. How could they be so oblivious to their utterly foul and offensive surroundings?
Kelley resisted the urge to run and with Theodora at her side, made her way through the town. Eventually they reached City Hall and stamping as much of the street muck off their feet as possible, made their way inside...
